Flame Red Birch Top // 16/4 Maple Base // Butterfly Leaf Extension System // Lacquer Finish // Timber Frame Inspiired Handcut Joinery // Hand Formed Under Bevel
The Newport has a pleasing contemporary appearance with deep roots in thousands of years of furniture design theory and construction methods. The all wood construction of the base is comprised of three types of joinery: haunched through tenons and mortises, fully housed bridle joints, and finger joints. These joints are historically found in Japanese, European, and Colonial American timberframe construction. The form of the base was specifically designed to work in conjuction with the state-of-the-art butterfly leaf extension mechanism. These mechanisms require long stretches of un-supported spans with ample clearance for the mechanism to function properly and to have ample leg clearance. This base design meets those requirements perfectly while also being incledibly strong and very beautiful.
Each detail of these pieces, from the hand-formed curves and traditional cut joinery of the base, to the grain matched figured birch top, was completed start to finish by a single master furnituremaker. The skilled handwork is evident in the subtle imperfections and delightful texture of the surfaces, reminiscent of the finely crafted furniture of past eras that inspired this design.
